Avery Fischer Udagawa’s translations from Japanese include the middle grade novels Temple Alley Summer (2022 Mildred L. Batchelder Award winner) and The House of the Lost on the Cape (2024 Batchelder honor book), both by Sachiko Kashiwaba; as well as J-Boys: Kazuo’s World, Tokyo, 1965 by Shogo Oketani. Born and raised in Kansas, she studied English and Asian Studies at St. Olaf College in Minnesota. She holds an MA in Advanced Japanese Studies from The University of Sheffield. She has studied at Nanzan University, Nagoya, on a Fulbright Fellowship, and at the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Studies, Yokohama. She serves as global translator coordinator in the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). [dj]
