Laura Watkinson translates books for young readers of all ages, from picture books to young adult thrillers. She works mainly from Dutch into English but also from Italian, German, and Frisian. Her translations include Tonke Dragt's The Letter for the King, which was made into a Netflix series, and Annet Schaap's Lampie, shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal, the first translation ever to do so. Three books translated by Watkinson have won the Mildred L. Batchelder Award: Mikis and the Donkey (2015) and Soldier Bear (2012), both by Bibi Dumon Tak; and Mister Orange by Truus Matti (2014). She was awarded the Vondel Prize for her translation of The Letter for the King. She lives in a tall, thin house on a canal in Amsterdam with her husband and their cat. [dj]
