Anthea Bell (1936-2018) is renowned for her translations from French and German. She translated children’s, young adult, and adult literature into English, from Stefan Zweig to Asterix. The Oxford Guide to Literature in English Translation describes her work on Asterix as “the art of the translator at its best.” Her translations of Germany’s Cornelia Funke helped propel Funke’s fantasy YA series into bestsellers in the English-speaking world, among the earliest translated YA literature to obtain that degree of popularity.
