David Colmer translates Dutch literature, including literary fiction, nonfiction, children’s books, and poetry. He is a four-time winner of the David Reid Poetry Translation Prize, and in 2012 was awarded the Dutch Foundation for Literature prize for lifetime achievement in translation. His translations for children include several books by Annie M.G. Schmidt, “the queen of twentieth-century Dutch children’s literature.” His translation of Toon Tellegen’s I Wish drew this comment from reviewer Betsy Bird: “If ever there was a book worthy of a Batchelder Award, or some similar medal for translation and writing, it is this.” [dj]
