Hillel Halkin is the primary translator of Israeli Hans Christian Andersen winner Uri Orlev. Four of Halkin’s Orlev translations have won the Batchelder Award: The Island on Bird Street (1985), The Man from the Other Side (1992), The Lady with the Hat (1996), and Run, Boy, Run (2004). A translator of other prominent Hebrew and Yiddish writers such as S. Y. Agnon, Amos Oz and Sholem Aleichem, the American-born Halkin is also a prominent social and literary critic. [dj]
