What began as a pioneering research project of the University of Maryland’s Human-Computer Interaction Lab, the International Children’s Digital Library (ICDL) was created with the participation of children on the design teams – hence the child-friendly approach to searching. Books are indexed in a variety of ways: by list, language, color, shape, format, genre, character, and “true vs. make believe.” Twenty years after the initial funding concluded, the library was basically shut down – but it has now been rebuilt in simpler form, and still includes 4,000 books! Unfortunately, translations are no longer available, but you can still access digital copies of books in their original language. Many of the books are vintage/historical. Presentations and research papers about ICDL are also available on the site. [al/ayg]
